2. Atherton tableland

Suggested guided tour from Cairns to see Australian wildlife and wet tropics: gorges, tropical farms, wild animals and birds, giant trees in a jungle. Introduction to Cairns gay life.

This tour is one of the most interesting and informative tours not just in Cairns but in Australia. There are few other opportunities to see such diversity – from farms to wildlife – and to learn so many interesting things.

Description of this one-day tour from Cairns:
(The arrangements for Turtle Cove, Pt Douglas, etc. could be slightly different. ).

The tour starts at 9am in Cairns. You will go to the mountains covered by a jungle, and to the Atherton tableland behind the mountains. You will visit a wildlife reserve with some unique and cute Australian animals and birds (at Rainforestation). After the tropical Kuranda with rich Aboriginal heritage you will see a change in the landscape – we will be going through a savannah and will visit a true township of huge termite hills. You will go to Mareeba, the sunniest city in Australia which claims 300 days of sunshine per year. You will go past vast banana and mango plantations, and will visit the ‘capital’ of the tableland – Atherton where you will have lunch. You could visit, if you wish (for an additional fee), a museum with a unique collection of minerals, including the World’s biggest Amethyst Geode – The ‘Empress of Uruguay’ and a meteorite piece.

Platypus 2014

And then, to a place where one of the rarest and unique animals of the world lives – the platypus. It is one of the only two egg-laying mammals in the world and it inhabits the most remote places in Australia with pure water and clean environment. You will be able to see the platypus in the wild in its natural habitat.

The tour will then take you to Lake Eacham, a crater lake in the jungle. You will see turtles and fish there, and could swim in this friendly round lake (if you are not afraid of cool water). After that, you will go to the Curtain Fig Tree which is 1000 years old.

Then your route will take us to the beautiful Millaa Millaa Falls which have a perfect shape and are amongst the most beautiful waterfalls in Australia. You will also be able to have a swim there, if you wish.

This unique tour will take you to the genuine Australian outback (which locals also call ‘bush’), you will get to know Australian wildlife, and visit the most beautiful places of the Australian wet tropics. You will learn lots of new and interesting things. After you will go to your hotel down through a picturesque winding mountain road, through the southern suburbs of Cairns with a couple of Sikh (!) temples, and the main city road.

In Cairns you could visit some places popular with gays: clubs and restaurants. You could also enquire about such activities as Tropical Pride which includes a Fair Day; concerts, balls and parties; and post Sydney Mardi Gras recovery at the famous Turtle Cove resort on the Coral Sea.
